The Dunmow u3a Thursday Art Group has gone from strength to strength since it began in 2016. Our members really enjoy coming to the sessions. We particularly enjoy sharing ideas and learning from each other. It's a very friendly, helpful group.

Fees are modest, usually about £1 to £1.25 per week, per member, payable at the beginning of each term. These fees are to pay for the hall hire.

The hall is spacious, so we have plenty of room. There is adequate free parking at the hall.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are available. Just 40p a cup with biscuits. We make our own whenever we fancy a cuppa!

In the past we have displayed our paintings in the Dunmow Library to celebrate the u3a's 40th anniversary and another exhibit was at St Mary's Church, Dunmow. We also had two demonstrations in acrylic and watercolour by the local artist, David Pasfield. More recently another local artist, Louise Man, showed us how to paint from nature in the form of Autumn leaves and hydrangea flower heads using a very loose technique.

From time to time we meet socially. A trip to the Fry Museum in Saffron Walden with lunch afterwards was enjoyed by everyone. Our Christmas lunch this year was at the Angel & Harp, Dunmow. At the end of July we organised a tasty lunch at the Three Willows, Birchanger. More outings/events are being planned for this term.

The group decides on different themes/subjects from time to time but some members prefer to paint/draw from their own ideas/subjects. We often comment that being open to diverse ideas makes our group so effective.

We have previously learnt a lot from viewing Paul Clark's online videos in watercolours. We feel as a group we are developing artistically.

Apart from watercolours and acrylics, we use pastels, pen with watercolour wash and pencils; the materials are varied throughout the year. We work from photos, still life objects, portrait subjects and view professional online artists' work.

In the past, we have had the help of a mentor/tutor. Currently our artistic advancement is through our own resources and self-reliance.
