Birchanger Wood is an ancient woodland and appears to have been part of the “wildwood” which covered much of England after the last Ice Age. The management of the wood has resulted in the structure of the woodland we see today, giving a mosaic of habitats for the maximum variety of wildlife.  Much of the wood is carpeted with English bluebells, which are a picture in the spring.  It is also known as one of the finest in Essex for the wood anemone, and altogether 126 species of trees, flowers and grasses have been identified. Because of its location between gardens and farmland, birds from various habitats can also be seen around the wood.  The Warden will meet us and give us an introduction to the Wood before taking us on a guided tour of the Wood, pointing out the various trees and plants. For those who would like to, we can go to Home & Eat afterwards for coffee and cake.

If you would like to come please email Julia on dunmowgg@gmail.com putting Birchanger woods in the subject and stating if you can give or need a lift.

Directions for the entrance to the Wood:

From Parsonage Lane, Bishop’s Stortford, (which links Stansted Road with the top of Dunmow Road), follow Heath Row round to park near the Water Tower, which will be clearly visible. The public footpath almost opposite No.122 takes you a short distance to enter the wood just by the Water Tower where we will meet.
